Lea Tyrrell is the evening and night co-anchor for
News 12 Long Island.
One
of Long Island's most widely-known and highly-respected television
journalists, Lea Tyrrell is the co-anchor of News 12 Long Island's
Evening and Night Editions.
A long-time
resident of Long Island, Lea has been associated with News 12 since
it premiered as the country's first local 24-hour, all-news network
in December of 1986. Beginning her career with News 12 as a reporter
and newswriter, Lea's talents were quickly recognized, and she was
rapidly promoted to the anchor desk.
From
the very outset of her career as a professional journalist at L.I.
News Tonight, WLIG-TV, and then News 12, Lea's accomplishments have
garnered for her an ever-increasing number of awards and acknowledgements.
Over the past few years, she has received a number of excellence
in journalism awards from such professional organizations as the
Associated Press and the Press Club of Long Island, an Excellence
Award from the New York State Heart Association for her medical
series "The Cold, Heart Facts," and FOLIO awards for her
live courtroom coverage of the Matthew Solomon and Robert Golub
murder trials. In addition, Lea has received the Leadership Award
for her achievements in telecommuni- cations from the Nassau Community
College Adjunct Faculty Association. She has been recognized as
a "Woman of Distinction" by the March of Dimes and has
been named a nationwide "Woman of Promise" by Good Housekeeping
magazine.
A firm
believer in sharing her talents with the community at large, Lea
devotes a sizeable portion of her time to a variety of educational,
civic and community service organizations. She has served as a member
of the Board of Overseers of the New York Institute of Technology,
and has made a number of personal appearances on behalf of groups
such as the American Heart
Association, the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, the
National Center for Disability Services, and the Association for
the Help of Retarded Children.
Lea's
outstanding college years were a fitting prelude to her successful
career now as a television anchorwoman. After receiving her Associate's
Degree from Nassau Community College, Lea went on to New York Institute
of Technology where she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor
of Fine Arts Degree in Communications. Lea graduated at the top
of her class, winning a number of academic awards, with a perfect
4.0 grade point average.
